An Interview With Sarah Stowell, Creator of Sarah Stowell Style

The first time we chatted with Sarah Stowell in July 2014, she shared all the juicy details of working as a Talent Coordinator for E! News host Giuliana Rancic. A little more than a year later, Sarah (whose last name changed with her recent marriage!) has added to her repertoire, establishing herself as a leading style blogger.

While Giuliana has since moved back to Chicago, Sarah stayed in Los Angeles, working with Giuliana remotely, launching her blog Sarah Stowell Style, and most recently planning her gorgeous wedding (Giuliana’s son Duke was the ring bearer.)

Sarah’s veteran advice for breaking into the entertainment industry? Confidence. She urges the importance of being true to oneself, blocking negativity and always saying yes—even if it means going the extra mile to figure something out. Her only regret? Not getting her blog up and running sooner! Read on to see how she stands out among the crowd of bloggers and her best beauty tips (hint: plenty of hydration!)

Her Starting Point

Welcome back! What have you been up to since we last talked?

I am still working for Giuliana, but the day-to-day nature of my job has shifted. Giuliana recently relocated to Chicago along with her family and I stayed behind in California where I am from and where all my family and friends are. She will be back every week for Fashion Police tapings and I am still managing our LA office. Working with Giuliana the past five years has been a blessing and I am glad that I am still able to work with her even if it’s long distance!

I recently launched my own personal style blog which has been a long time in the making. It’s something I always wanted to do, but life kept getting in the way. It is a big commitment (if you want to do it the way I am doing it) and I wanted to make sure that I was “all in” so to speak. I launched at the beginning of July and have been having a blast with it. I regret not getting it up and running sooner!

Last time we talked about the value of positive attitudes & kindness in the workplace. Does that advice still ring true?

It is true for the workplace and life in general. There has never been a time when having a positive attitude or being kind has been anything but beneficial to my work, as well as my own personal mindset.

I have also learned more about balancing my office life and my own personal goals. My job with Giuliana comes first, so any time and effort I put into my blog is up to me to figure out. It might mean that I wake up extra early to upload my photos or stay up late finding the best new products to feature, but it makes me happy and I love the end result.

What’s your advice for breaking into the entertainment industry?

Go for it and don’t care about what anyone else thinks. That was always my biggest worry. ‘What if people don’t like my style?’ or ‘What if I fail?’ But worrying about that and doing nothing as a result will never lead to success.

Honestly, there haven’t really been any downsides. By putting myself out there, I am open to my readers and followers commenting whatever they want- good or bad. The sense of accomplishment I feel from doing a good job as Giuliana’s assistant or as a personal style blogger far outweighs any negative opinions people (who don’t even know me!) may have of me.

Giuliana announced in early July that she would step down from her anchor position at E! News. How will her new role affect you?

I am no longer with Giuliana physically in the office day in and day out. Nothing has really slowed down, we just work together from afar. The day-to-day schedule is different, but the assistance I provide for her for all of her projects is still the same.

Her Big Break

Tell us about Sarah Stowell Style.

I wanted to start a blog for a long time, but it was never the right time. It felt good when people would ask me where I got my clothes, whether from Instagram or an episode of Giuliana & Bill, and I knew that starting a blog would be so much fun. It’s like playing dress up every day! About a year ago, I met two amazing girls who started their own web design and photography business called Vibe Tribe Creative. We clicked instantly. I knew they were the perfect gals to work with on my exciting new project and together we created Sarah Stowell Style!

The most rewarding part of having my own blog is just that- it’s my own. I love being responsible for my own success and one of the biggest career (and life!) lessons I have learned is that you get out whatever you put in.

How have you managed your dual roles?

I have continued my main role as Giuliana’s assistant since last time we spoke. While Giuliana is no longer hosting E! News everyday, everything else has remained the same.

I have had a ton of support for my blog which is awesome and so much encouragement has come from my co-workers at E! Everyone is really happy for me that I have something of my own that I love. Giuliana is one of my biggest supporters and she is super encouraging.

How do you distinguish yourself from other bloggers?

I don’t really try to distinguish myself from other bloggers, I strive to be myself. I wear the clothes that I would normally wear and I post items and products that I like and want to share with my readers. Yes, it’s important to be different, but that’s how we are as human beings. Everyone is different and I think it’s important to show an accurate representation of who you really are through your blog.

I hope to continue to grow my readers steadily and I have noticed in the few short months I have had my blog that engaging with my followers is the best way to continue to grow. It’s important to learn from the people who are essentially supporting me and my new project and that should always be at the forefront of my brain moving forward.

Her Perspective

What does an average day look like?

Early mornings and late nights are spent working on my blog. I have to get dressed every day anyway, I might as well snap some photos in whatever I put on! I have had so much fun with it and I can’t wait to continue to improve and grow my blog as time goes on.

What are your best life hacks?

I am extremely on top of staying organized and even more so now with my time management. I am busier than ever with my new blog and being a newlywed so I focus extra hard on managing my time effectively so no areas of my life are neglected.

And so often when our schedules get busy, we forget to take care of ourselves. I am constantly reminding myself to drink more water and take my vitamins every day so I stay healthy and focused. I just bought a BPA free water jug that I love. The ounces are listed on the outside of the bottle so I can keep track of exactly how much water I drink every day. For me, everything is just better when I am properly hydrated. My brain works quicker, my skin looks more vibrant and I sleep better! Win-win-win if you ask me!

And finally, what do you wake up looking forward to? What’s next for your career?

I am really looking forward to continuing to grow and improve my blog. It has been really incredible to see the response I have gotten so far and I can’t wait to see what’s in store. Like I said before, the more work I put into it, the more I know I will get out of it. I am super excited to work hard and see the results!
