Bring it on, 2020! I’m making this next decade my most powerful one yet.
Last year, I wrote about how 2019 was going to be the
Year of Disruption. A year where we pushed through comfort zones, faced fears, and (hopefully) became better at adapting to the rapidly-changing times we’re living in.
At Career Contessa this meant changes to our workflows and job responsibilities, it meant
hosting our first mini-career conference in New York, producing over
five new online courses, announcing my super-secret project, and it also meant tough prioritization calls. Here's a little peek at some of my 2019 highlights.
After six years in business, I can confidently say that 2019 threw me plenty of curveballs and I’m ready to wave goodbye to her.
Here’s a massive round of applause for all of us surviving (maybe even thriving?) 2019’s disruption, multiple mercury-in-retrogrades, and an unpredictable future ahead of us.
This is why I’m deeming this year (and new decade!) the Year of Power. Power to actively guide the direction of your career—one that provides fulfillment— on your terms.
This begins with the question, “How do you (want to) manage your career?” A lot of people don’t really think about “managing” their career. It just sort of happens.
Introducing Career Awareness
Others take the “kind-of, sort-of” approach to career management. They tend to make decisions in response to something that’s happened, usually something unexpected (even bad). Both of these approaches offer little, if any, control over the direction of your career. The alternative is to consciously, actively direct your career.
What determines the career decisions you’ll make when you make them, and how you’ll make them is something I call “
career awareness.” This term, used at Career Contessa, describes your career attitudes, knowledge, and experiences (really, everything you know) that you consider when you make decisions about your career.
While anyone can make random decisions, the more informed your
career awareness, the more likely you’ll make successful decisions with purpose and intent—ones that help you actively guide your direction and provide fulfillment.
That’s why we’re committed to bringing you new, relevant advice from successful professionals and making it easier for you to access data that helps you manage every stage of your career. Here are just some of the benefits of expanding your career awareness:
- Better opportunities
- More money
- Increased confidence
- New choices
- Contentment
